This booklet is ready a brand new and various means of impending and learning the historical past of the equipped surroundings and using historic precedents in layout. although, even though what i'm providing is new for what's presently referred to as architectural heritage, either my strategy or even my conclusions aren't that new in different fields, as i found while i tried to discover aiding proof. * in truth, of all of the disciplines facing a variety of features of the learn of the prior, architectural background turns out to have replaced least within the methods i'm advocating. there's at present a revival of curiosity within the background of structure and concrete shape; an analogous curiosity applies to idea, vernacular layout, and culture-environment family members. After years of forget, the research of background and using ancient precedent are back changing into very important. even though, that curiosity has now not resulted in new methods to the topic, nor have its bases been tested. This i attempt to do. In so doing, I speak about a extra rigorous and, i might argue, a extra legitimate means of taking a look at ancient facts and consequently of utilizing such info in a conception of the outfitted setting and as precedent in environmental layout. Underlying this is often my view of Environment-Behavior stories CEBS) as an rising idea instead of as info to assist layout in line with present "theory. " even if it will be the topic of one other booklet, a precis assertion of this place might be useful.

Greater specificity does not help. To "design hOUSing for culture" is indeed more specific but no easier nor more feasible. To consider housing for a given culture is yet more specific but still impossible. To consider how various components of life-style and activities relate to systems of settings and environmental quality profiles is both feasible and not too difficult. This becomes critical in the study of past environments. To attempt to "analyze an environment in terms of the culture of its designers" is an impossible and even meaningless task.

The evidence can be ignored. 2. One may acknowledge its existence but reject its value or interest. 3. One can romanticize it and copy various solutions, forms, or design elements; this is equivalent to using past environments as a quarry for mining. 4. One can learn from the evidence by applying various concepts and theories derived from EBS, at a high level of abstraction, derive lessons, and apply these lessons and principles that then become precedents (Rapoport 1982b,c, 1983b,d, 1986b). The distinction between the last two is of most interest, as I have argued in connection with vernacular design and environments in developing countries.

Although a fuller discussion of this topic will be more relevant to a discussion of theory elsewhere, a few points need to be made very briefly. , Rapoport 1977, 1980a) about housing (Rapoport 1980c), and about culture (Rapoport 1977, 1986c, 1990). This is because otherwise these terms are not helpful. One needs to conceptualize environment-and for different purposes, different conceptualizations are useful; one that I find useful is as the organization of space, time, meaning, and communication.
